Chris studied Computer Science at Cambridge and went on to co-found Metaswitch Networks in 1981, where he was CTO for many years. The global business with 800 employees was eventually acquired by Microsoft in 2020. Investors in Metaswitch included Sequoia Capital and Francisco Partners.

After spending a period in Palo Alto Chris returned to the UK in 2012 and since then has built an angel portfolio of over 100 businesses, including over 40 Entrepreneur First alumni companies. He was chairman of Magic Pony Technology and is currently chairman of Kheiron Medical, Phoelex and Nodes & Links. He is a fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering and was awarded a CBE in 2014. He is also a trustee of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Being blind himself, in 2017 Chris rode a tandem 3,600 miles across America to restore sight to 4,500 people blinded by cataracts.
