PhycoWorks is building a platform that uses AI and synthetic biology to develop algae strains that can transform CO2 into valuable products and are purpose-built for industrial application.

Algae have the potential to sustainably convert CO2 into food, fuel, materials, drugs, and more. However, scaling algae production is challenging, as it involves balancing a large set of environmental and biological factors that vary from strain to strain.

PhycoWorks’ platform integrates cutting-edge computational and biological technology to accelerate new product development, improve strain performance, and optimize production processes. PhycoWorks’ technology helps scientists and clients sift through biology’s endless possibilities. Through data-driven models, it can chart and harness optimisation landscapes with precision.

Stefan
Grossfurthner

CEO

Stefan holds a PhD in Biotechnology from the University of Cambridge, where his research focused on microalgae. He also holds a number of publications in this sector. Prior to his PhD he achieved a First Class degree in Biotechnology from Imperial college London.

Ludovico
Mitchener

CTO

Ludovico graduated with Distinction from Imperial College London in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. His Master’s thesis on Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning was published in Springers’ Machine Learning journal. He started his career working at a leading software startup before returning to Imperial College London to work with the National Crime Agency.
